Nová síň Gallery

A space with history.

Nová síň is a renowned, beautiful gallery in the centre of Prague. It stands out above all for its perfectly diffused daylight, the restraint of its functionalist space and its convenient location near the National Theatre.

The tradition of Nová síň is linked to the art association Jednota umělců výtvarných (Union of Fine Artists), whose roots go back to 1898. Its founders include artists of the so-called National Theatre generation such as Josef Václav Myslbek, František Ženíšek, Vojtěch Hynais, Václav Brožík, Mikoláš Aleš and others. In the early 1930s the association commissioned a project for the partial reconstruction of the farm buildings of the Ursuline Convent and the construction of a new building on the site of the convent's original farm entrance. The project was designed by architect Jaroslav Rössler, a pupil of Jan Kotěra. The association house with two exhibition halls, called Nová síň, was built accordingly and opened in 1934. Besides a smaller gallery upstairs and a larger exhibition hall on the ground floor, it also included a number of rooms for the association's and artistic activities. Today only the ground-floor exhibition space, known as Galerie Nová síň, remains in operation.

After the turbulent history of the last century, Nová síň is territorially part of the convent and is owned by the Czech-Moravian Province of the Roman Union of the Order of St. Ursula.

From 2005 to 2014 the exhibition programme of Galerie Nová síň was run by Jednota umělců výtvarných.

Since May 2014 Galerie Nová síň has been managed by a private operator.

In October 2014 Nová síň commemorated 80 years since its opening in 1934.

The Galerie Nová síň website was selected by the National Library for archiving for future generations of web users.
